Noise-induced hearing loss is exactly what it sounds like: permanent hearing damage caused by sounds that are too loud, too long, or too close. Unlike age-related hearing loss, which happens gradually over decades, noise damage can happen in a single afternoon or build up quietly over years of exposure.
The important part is that it is entirely preventable. And the damage, once done, is permanent.
How loud is too loud
Sound is measured in decibels. Here is a rough guide:
- 60 dB — normal conversation. Safe indefinitely.
- 70 dB — a vacuum cleaner or busy restaurant. Safe for extended periods.
- 85 dB — heavy city traffic, a food blender. Damage begins after about 8 hours.
- 95 dB — a motorcycle, a power drill. Damage begins after about 50 minutes.
- 100 dB — a snowmobile, a chainsaw. Damage begins after about 15 minutes.
- 110 dB — a rock concert, a table saw. Damage begins after about 2 minutes.
- 120 dB — a siren at close range. Pain threshold.
- 140+ dB — a gunshot, a firecracker. Immediate permanent damage possible.
The key principle: for every 3-decibel increase, the safe exposure time cuts in half. At 85 dB you have 8 hours. At 88 dB you have 4 hours. At 91 dB you have 2 hours. It adds up fast.
Who is most at risk in Edmonton
Edmonton’s economy means certain industries are heavily represented, and they happen to be some of the loudest:
Oil and gas workers. Drilling rigs, compressors, pump jacks, and heavy equipment routinely exceed 95 dB. Workers on rigs or in plants may spend 12-hour shifts surrounded by machinery that is well above the damage threshold.
Construction and trades. Table saws, grinders, jackhammers, and nail guns all push past 100 dB. Even brief, repeated exposures without protection cause cumulative damage.
Manufacturing and warehouse workers. Conveyor systems, forklifts, and stamping machines create constant background noise that sits right around the danger zone. It does not sound painful, but 8 hours at 85 to 90 dB is enough.
Musicians and venue staff. Edmonton has a strong live music scene. Performers, sound engineers, bartenders, and bouncers at concert venues and nightclubs are exposed to 100 to 115 dB regularly.
Emergency responders. Sirens, radio chatter at high volume, engine noise in fire trucks and ambulances, and gunfire at training ranges all contribute.
Recreational exposure. Snowmobiling, ATVing, hunting, target shooting, attending concerts, and even mowing the lawn all produce noise levels that can cause damage without protection.
Signs of noise-induced hearing loss
Noise damage is sneaky because it often does not hurt at the time. Here is what to watch for:
Ringing or buzzing after loud exposure. If your ears ring after a concert, a shift on a job site, or a day at the shooting range, that is not normal. It is a warning sign that the hair cells in your inner ear have been stressed.
Muffled hearing after noise exposure. If everything sounds like you are hearing it through a wall after a loud event, you have experienced a temporary threshold shift. With repeated exposure, that temporary shift becomes permanent.
Difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds. Noise damage almost always hits high frequencies first. Consonant sounds like “s,” “f,” “th,” and “sh” become harder to distinguish. People sound like they are mumbling.
Trouble following conversations in noisy places. Restaurants, family gatherings, and meetings become exhausting because your brain is working overtime to fill in the gaps.
Needing to turn the TV or phone volume higher than others. If people around you are comfortable at a volume that feels too quiet for you, something has changed.

Why the damage is permanent
Your inner ear contains about 15,000 tiny hair cells that convert sound waves into electrical signals for your brain. When these cells are exposed to excessive noise, they bend, break, or die. In mammals, they do not regenerate.
This is not like a broken bone or a cut. Once those hair cells are gone, they are gone. No surgery, no medication, and no supplement can bring them back. Hearing aids can amplify the sound that remains, but they cannot restore what has been lost.
That is why prevention matters so much more than treatment.
How to protect your hearing
Wear hearing protection. This is the single most important thing. Foam earplugs from a hardware store are better than nothing. Custom molded earplugs from an audiologist are better still because they fit properly, stay in place, and can be made with filters that preserve sound quality.
Follow the 60/60 rule for headphones. Keep the volume at or below 60 percent of maximum. Take a break every 60 minutes. If someone standing next to you can hear your music through your headphones, it is too loud.
Create distance. At concerts, stand farther from the speakers. On job sites, stay upwind of the noisiest equipment when possible. Even a few extra metres can reduce the decibels reaching your ears.
Know your workplace rights. In Alberta, employers are required by OHS legislation to provide hearing protection and implement noise management programs when workplace noise exceeds 85 dB. If your employer is not providing protection, that is a regulatory issue.
Get a baseline hearing test. If you work in a noisy environment, get your hearing tested before you notice any problems. A baseline gives you and your audiologist a reference point for detecting early changes.
