Back-to-School Hearing Test: Why Every Edmonton Parent Should Book One

School starts in a few days and the checklist is long: supplies, backpacks, haircuts, new shoes. One thing most parents skip? A hearing check. It takes less than an hour and it can explain problems that nothing else will.

Why hearing matters more in the classroom

A child with even mild hearing loss misses more than you think. In a quiet room at home they seem fine. But a classroom is not quiet. There are 25 other kids, a noisy hallway, the hum of the ventilation system, and a teacher whose voice has to carry across the room.

When a child cannot hear clearly in that environment, they do not raise their hand and say so. They just stop paying attention. They look out the window. They fidget. They fall behind on instructions and get frustrated. Teachers and parents often assume the problem is focus or behaviour, when the real issue is that the child literally cannot hear what is being said.

Research consistently shows that undetected hearing loss in school-age children leads to lower reading scores, slower language development, and social withdrawal. The earlier it is caught, the easier it is to fix.

Signs your child might need a hearing test

You do not need to wait for something dramatic. These everyday patterns are what most parents notice first:

• Asking “what?” or “huh?” more than usual
• Turning the TV or tablet volume higher than everyone else needs
• Sitting very close to the speaker or screen
• Not responding when called from another room
• Struggling to follow directions, especially multi-step ones
• Watching faces closely when someone talks to them
• Seeming to “tune out” in noisy environments
• Falling behind in reading or phonics at school
• Getting unusually tired or irritable after school

Any two or three of these are worth checking. It does not mean there is definitely a problem, but it means a 30-minute test can rule it out and give you peace of mind.

What happens during a children’s hearing test

We test children ages 8 and up at our Edmonton clinics. The whole visit takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and there is nothing painful or scary about it.

Our audiologist starts by looking in your child’s ears to check for anything obvious like wax buildup or fluid. Then they do the actual hearing test in a quiet room. Your child wears headphones and listens for sounds at different volumes and pitches, responding by pressing a button or raising their hand. For older kids, there is also a word recognition test where they repeat words back.

We keep it relaxed and friendly. Most kids find it pretty easy, and some even think it is fun. You are welcome to stay in the room the whole time.

After the test, the audiologist goes over the results with you right away. If hearing is normal, great. If there is any concern, you will leave with a clear explanation of what is going on and what the options are. No pressure, no upsell, just straightforward information.

When to book

The best time is before school starts or in the first few weeks. If your child is already struggling by October, you have lost two months that could have been better.

Do not wait for a problem to get worse

Hearing issues in children rarely improve on their own. A child who is struggling to hear in Grade 3 will struggle more in Grade 4 when the material gets harder and the classroom gets louder.
